I asked for help a couple of weeks ago regarding a faulty thermostat. That has
now been sorted, and thanks to all who replied.
I’ve now got a new problem with the car. Whilst driving on Sunday on the
motorway I accelerated quite hard a few times in the space of about 10
minutes. I was doing about 80mph on average. Suddenly, I could smell burning
/ coolant and LOTS of smoke started coming out of the exhaust. I pulled over
to let the car cool down for few minutes. Even while stationary, if I revved
the engine at all, lots of smoke still kept coming out (the smoke was grey /
white, with no blue in it).
After a few minutes, I started driving again, accelerating slowly up to about
50mph, without using the turbo, still with a fair amount of smoke coming out.
After five minutes, the smoke and the burning smell were completely gone and
the car seemed ok.
Now, however, whenever I accelerate hard, with the engine speed over 3000rpm
(at which point the turbo cuts in) the burning smell starts up again. I
haven’t kept this up for more than 5 seconds at a time, so I haven’t had the
smoke problem again, but iI’m sure if I kept my foot down, this would happen.
The turbo still seems to work ok.
Details of the car: –
1989 Nissan 200SX (240SX in the US).
Engine : 1809cc, turbo, twin cam, 16 valve.
Current mileage : 113,000.
The turbo was replaced about six months ago, with a new one (just before I
bought the car – I’ve still got the receipt from the garage).
Fuel type : Leaded or unleaded.
Does anyone have any clues as to what’s causing the problem? I wouldn’t have
thought it was the turbo, as it’s fairly new – yet it seems to be when the
turbo cuts in that the burning smell starts.
It’s not burning oil, as the smoke that came out wasn’t blue, but a grey
colour. It’s not losing water at all, so I’ve been told it’s not a head gasket
that’s gone.
I’d very much appreciate any help on this problem, as it sounds as if it could
be quite expensive to find and fix.
If anyone requires any more info, please e-mail me.
Thanks,
Shaun.
