200SX (in the UK – 240SX in the US) problem

I asked for help a couple of weeks ago regarding a faulty thermostat. That has
now been sorted, and thanks to all who replied.

I’ve now got a new problem with the car. Whilst driving on Sunday on the
motorway I accelerated quite hard a few times in the space of about 10
minutes. I was doing about 80mph on average. Suddenly, I could smell burning
/ coolant and LOTS of smoke started coming out of the exhaust. I pulled over
to let the car cool down for few minutes. Even while stationary, if I revved
the engine at all, lots of smoke still kept coming out (the smoke was grey /
white, with no blue in it).

After a few minutes, I started driving again, accelerating slowly up to about
50mph, without using the turbo, still with a fair amount of smoke coming out.
After five minutes, the smoke and the burning smell were completely gone and
the car seemed ok.

Now, however, whenever I accelerate hard, with the engine speed over 3000rpm
(at which point the turbo cuts in) the burning smell starts up again. I
haven’t kept this up for more than 5 seconds at a time, so I haven’t had the
smoke problem again, but iI’m sure if I kept my foot down, this would happen.

The turbo still seems to work ok.

Details of the car: –
1989 Nissan 200SX (240SX in the US).
Engine : 1809cc, turbo, twin cam, 16 valve.
Current mileage : 113,000.
The turbo was replaced about six months ago, with a new one (just before I
bought the car – I’ve still got the receipt from the garage).
Fuel type : Leaded or unleaded.

Does anyone have any clues as to what’s causing the problem? I wouldn’t have
thought it was the turbo, as it’s fairly new – yet it seems to be when the
turbo cuts in that the burning smell starts.

It’s not burning oil, as the smoke that came out wasn’t blue, but a grey
colour. It’s not losing water at all, so I’ve been told it’s not a head gasket
that’s gone.

I’d very much appreciate any help on this problem, as it sounds as if it could
be quite expensive to find and fix.

If anyone requires any more info, please e-mail me.

Thanks,
Shaun.

Q: Put on steel wheels for winter, hub now exposed

I have a 93 NX2000.  I put on steel wheels for the winter just today, for the
first time ever. (I used to just use the stock alloy, but got tired of having
the tires stripped off every time).  Anyway, I don’t have hub caps.  The front
wheel hubs right in the middle have an oiled threaded shaft exposed, with a
pin stuck in it.  It’s about 1.5 inches in diameter.  It looks like it
may be a sensitive part of the wheel/drive shaft assembly.  Does anyone know
if it is ok to leave this exposed for winter roads? (in Canada)   Thanks.

High pitch whine on Pathfinder….

I have a 97 Pathfinder which I have been using to tow a small boat (2300#
w/trailer). When I am backing the trailer, I hear a high pitch whining noise.
It does not normally occur in reverse without the trailer hooked up so I don’t
know if this is a transmission problem or what? Any ideas?
Thanks

6K mile oil changes

Okie dokie, time to stir the pot a little.

I change my oil regularly at 6K miles, have used Mobil 1 5W-30 since the first
oil change at 3K miles, along with a Nissan filter on my 97 Altima.

I’ve had the oil analysed at each change, and there no indications of excessive
dirt, acid, or any other fault with the oil.

My driving consists mostly of long distance, steady freeway speed driving for
my daily commute. This condition is known to be the easiest on engine oil.
Weather is always above freezing, no sandstorms or anything like that.

As far as I can tell there is no reason to change oil any more frequently under
my service conditions. I’m satisfying the stated owner’s manual requirements
for warranty service (7500 miles). I even took a borescope and peered under the
cam/valve cover to examine the topside of the motor, which appears
exceptionally clean and free of varnish. It looks like brand new at 32K miles.

My mileage has steadily increased to around 27 mpg overall, 33 mpg on freeway
trips.

Anyhow, I’ve still had people admonish me for not doing the every 3K miles oil
changes. There’s really no reason in my circumstances to do so. The oil stays
clean, the car runs great and the engine stays nice and clean.  Why waste money
on too frequent changes, dump more used motor oil than necessary into the
environment and all that stuff?

If I lived in a desert with blowing grit, or I did a lot of stop and go
driving, short trips etc, I could see a point to frequent changes.

Wanted Pulsar workshop manuals

I’m rebuilding a ’91 Pulsar GTi-R engine and would like a workshop manual to
help. Other SR20Det engines are probably similar.

Any help appreciated.

240sx problems

Hello.  I own a 1989 240sx.
I am having problems with it right now.  Here is the problem:
When I was driving it, there would be pauses when I press down the gas
pedal.  It feels like the fuel is not flowing smoothly or there might be
some electrical sparking problem.   So I started the car up the next day
and attempted to drive it.  It drove ok, then all of the sudden, while I
am flooring the gas pedal, the RPM meter decreases to nothing.  And when I
came to a stop, the car stalls on me.
Can someone help me figure out what the problem might be?
Fuel pump?  Fuel filter?  Electrical?

The car has 120K miles on it.

One more thing, the car will not start now.  And it seems like it’s worse
when it’s cold outside.

Any help would be appretiated.

Oh, one last thing,  any one a mechanic in San Luis Obispo, CA or the
neighboring cities?
