Got a 87 Sentra and the heating blower only works on the highest setting! Just
adjusted my alternator belt previously, must’ve knocked something loose?! But
it DOES work on high.. hmmm
Thanks in advance

I would be highly interested in the response. I’ve got an 89 Maxima, 181K
miles, that has the same problem. The blower will only work on the maximum
setting. Whence does the problem lie? Is it an electrical one with the
switch or, is the fan unit/heater unit nearing the end of its life?

neither, on the max its the blower amplifier mounted to the bottom of the blower
housing. sometimes though a old blower will start drawing too many amps and burn
them up so just replacing the amp may not last too long and they are expencive.
I would get whole blower unit used with amp to keep this from happening. on
sentra either is amp also ,of it may have resistors. is just a coincidence that
it quit working after you tightened belt. glad I didn’t tighten your belt :-)

I have a 1987 Pulsar. Same thing happened. Had the repair
people look at it and found something became disconnected
around the switch. Resoldered the connections and it worked
fine again. It seems to be a safety mechanism so you don’t
lose complete use of the heater. Hope this helps.

There is probably a burnt out resistor pack that provides for the lower
blower speeds. Sorry, I’m not sure where it is on the Maxima. Common
locations are near the blower motor (sometimes there is a connector on the
side of the air duct near the motor–the resistors themselves are inside
the duct so they are cooled by the air stream) or else on the back side of
the fan speed switch itself.
In either case, replacing the resistor module should restore opperation of
all blower speeds. Shouldn’t be *too* expensive at the dealer, cheaper yet
at the junk yard.
