Pathfinder gauge problem

Help!!  I recently purchased a 95 Pathfinder SE with 50,000 miles on
it.  The problem is that the tachometer needle began bouncing
erratically.  It would then stop working at all and now when you turn
the ignition on, it sticks at 3,000 rpm and stays there.  I can pretty
much live with this, although it’s a nuisance, but now the speedo is
beginning to bounce wildly and then will drop to nothing.  Then after
about ten seconds of being at zero, it will finally jump to my actual
speed.  I believe that they are both electric rather than cable driven.
Could anybody please offer me some advice on where to start looking to
fix this?  I would rather not take it to the dealer if I can help it.
Thanks.

I had the same problem on my 1995 Pathfinder.  You need to replace the tach,
which is quite expensive.  Instead, do what I did and purchase an entire
    speedometer cluster.

Normally they cost over $250.00 (not installed).

I have one from my 1995 Pathfinder SE that I would sell to you for $100.00.
It is very easy to replace and take less than 20 minutes.  If you are around
the Central NJ area I would even put it in the car for no charge!

Please respond if you are interested to tchea…@myhost.com

I’ve got a similar problem with my ’95 Pathfinder SE (50K).  I’ve only
experienced the speedometer problem…so far.   Mine sticks, usually around
55-65,  and then will drop suddenly to the actual speed.

Does this sound like the same problem (tach)?

I’ve got a ’91 truck that’s had a bad spedometer for about a month.  It sticks
at 15 mph even at a stop then jumps to 40 mph when I get up to that speed.  It’s very
sluggish whether I’m accelerating or decelerating.
I fixed it today (finally).  I had been putting it off because I have very
little experience with cars and I knew any attempt to fix it would end in frustration.
I unscrewed and removed the molding around the guages, then unscrewed some more, then
removed the clear plastic shield that covers all the guages.  I could see that the
spedometer needle was curved toward the faceplate to a point where it was actually
touching it.  I could see a tiny track where it had been rubbing against it.  I bent
the needle back and that took care of it.
Maybe that hot Dallas summer we’ve been having melted it out of shape.  I have
    no idea what caused it.

I have a 95 King Cab 4×4 that had a similar problem with the speedo.
This is another problem that seems to come up in the newsgroups and the
Nissan 4×4 mailing list fairly frequently.

    You assumption is correct that the speedo and tach are electronic units;
not cable driven.  My problem turned out to be a defective sender at the
tranny.  If both your tach and speedo are going wonky, I expect it’s a
defective dash unit.  Both are replaced at the same time, as a sealed
    unit.

BUT FIRST, check all the electrical connections.  I have read about a
few of these problems being caused by loose connections.  If both the
tach and speedo are erratic, I’d look under the dash first.  Could be a
bad ground connection.  Does anything else on the same circuit seem
    wonky?"

    Hope this helps,

    Steve M.
